LOTR- War of the Ring Preview from a players view
Ok so on saturday he new rulebook for the LOTR SBG titled "war of the ring" will be hitting stores, but is it going to be worth the buy?
So far GW have told us that we are going to need (or want) atleast:
2 boxes of 24 warrior packs
1-2 boxes of cavalry
a hero set
a monster set (which for good players is going to be either a siege engine or an ent/eagle; all of which are very expensive)
The main selling point of the product is to "recreate the fantastic battles of middle earth" but wait, havent we seen this in: all 3 journeybooks, the sourcebooks, the main rulebook, and even legions of middle earth??
The requirments needed to start an army for this new system also sound strangly familiar, like the requirments for an army (I.E: 2 boxes of warriors and a hero) and the quadralateral movement trays??*cough* *cough* warhammer fantasy *cough* *cough*
Yet again those of us with truly humungous collections of a single army haven't had the chance to recreate the HUGE battles with 150+ models, but is that because we don't want to? some eager fans would enjoy this but most games are currently only about 500 points or so and even they last a good 1-2 hours so imagine how long these games are going to take, even with rules designed to cut the time down!
Another criticism would be that LOTR SBG has a reputation for having the most detailed models, which might mean that alot of the current collectors might only be in it for the fun of painting&modelling and perhaps don't want to spend about 6 months to paint a huge army that might never meet an opponent with an equally large army?
Yet again another flaw about the new system is regarding those of us who collect mainly metal armies such as angmar, dol guldor, far harad and many more. will we have to start new armies simply to not enjoy them as much or will we be forced to spend hundreds of $/£ on warhammer??
well i hope that the "war of the ring" is not just another way to try and squeeze more money out of the game. In any case even if it is, its their fault and we always have the good ol' skirmish rules to stick to.
Come saturday we will find out if it is just fantasy with lotr mini's, another way to sell or a very enjoyable set of rules to play with. Once i have got hold of it i will post another article relating to whether or not i am correct.
