Thinning down paints

Is there a science behind thinning down paints for miniatures? I think it's just a matter of opinion, everyone likes different stages of paint. You just have to find your own way into this.

very good points. I've been tending to put mine down a little thinner, since I rather end up having to go over it once, sometimes twice, more, because it is just easier to add more paint than to take it away. I've been using fortress grey over chaos black even, and it somehow works well, probably because the first layer, though a bit spotty has somewhat decent cover and allows the next layer to kind of grab better, and not have to overpower as much. Enchanted blue though I was able to add 2 drops of water to the pot, shake it, and it was one coat. I think the new GW paint pots might just be better though at keeping the paint ready to go, since they seem to seal a bit better.
