Hey guys this is my painting scheme that I use. I found a great vid on BOW and I guess they got it from some GW guys like me. Know my camera is broken so I had to use the BOW Video to create the tutorial, Its exactly the same as what I use, much better video quality for awesome pics and so I thought its fine to use as a replacement till I get my camera.
so without further ado!
Painting a Tyranid
In this tutorial I’m going to show you how to paint a Tyranid fast and effectively. Whether you’re painting 1 model, a brood or a horde this technique works well and is very, very fast. The paints you’ll need:
• Baal red (Wash)
• Skull white (spray paint if possible as it will be a primer)
• Gryphonne Sepia (Wash)
• Astronomican Grey (Foundation)
• Charadon granite (Foundation)
• Tallarn Flesh (Foundation)
• Badab Black (wash)
• Asurmen Blue (Wash)
• Dheneb stone
Optional (read below steps to see why):
• Red Food colouring
• Micro Krystal Klear
For my tutorial, BOW is going to be using a Tyranid Warrior. It will have a nice brown skin tone and Blue carapace. The final product you’ll end up with is this:
But first things first Prime the model white. When using a white spray paint never hold the release button down ALWAYS click and release, slowly covering the model with a !!!THIN!!! white coat.
Then Open your Gryphonne sepia and paint the SKIN areas with it (try not to paint the carapace or bone weapons such as scything talons etc.)
(Optional but recommended step!) Complete a second coat on the skin with Gryphonne Sepia to darken the tone.
Now using your Astronomican grey paint all of the carapace, carefully avoiding the skin, bone weapons, hooves and the spikes on weapons and back of legs.
For this step you need to use Charadon granite to get the bone weapons, hooves and the spikes on weapons and back of legs.
Next paint the tongue (only the tongue!) With Tallarn Flesh

Now using your Asurmen Blue wash paint the carapace making sure you have a nice even coat.
While you let the Asurmen Blue wash dry, get out your Badab black and paint quite a liberal amount onto all of the Charadon Granite areas. after the Asurmen Blue dries also apply the Badab black in between the carapace segments (where they overlap).
Now using Baal red apply the wash to the tongue, lower jaw and tendon filled cheek areas as well as the rib like areas all over the body.
Once the Baal red has dried, using a small brush carefully paint the teeth Dheneb stone.
The Final optional step is using the Micro Krystal Klear and food colouring. This step is used on the fleshy muscle areas that have been painted/ washed with Baal red. First you must mix a few drops of food colouring with some Micro Krystal Klear about a 50:50 mix. This will create a nice wet glossy appearance that adds realism to the model and I always use!
know its a finished Tyranid Warrior!!
and a little blue termagaunt for good measure
There are some other scheme’s as well:
This includes the regular steps for the rest of the model but Mechrite red on the carapace and Baal red wash over the Mechrite red instead of Astronomican Grey and Asurmen blue.
Hormagaunt purple with a leviathan purple wash creates another effective colour scheme which is a nice deep purple.
An effective green is thraka green over Knarloc green or Orkhide shade. It is my personal favourite though I do add in a few more steps for extra detail and that.
hopefully I will get a knew camera soon and post my extras for the green in this thread though its unlikely. But most important of all I give credit to www.beastsofwar.com for their awesome videos, tutorials, tips, paint schemes, question answers, army lists the list goes on, and on.
Cheers BOW
ENJOY!!
