Hey Matt,
Great to hear you got your stuff back - I'm a software engineer in my work day so I'm gonna definitely back what some of the other guys are saying about making an offsite backup in addition to your RAID setup. (just imaging if the place your server was located in went up in flames)

The Backup gem makes it amazingly easy to do remote backups to just about anywhere you want (Amazon S3, FTP, etc...). Search Google for "github backup" and it should be the first result (meskyanichi/backup)

If you ever want an opinion on anything web server related feel free to send me an email I'm happy to lend a hand.

Glad you guys are back.

Some hefty problems, lots of the comments are right. Try to minimize single points of failure.
- redundant power
- redundant disk (raid)
- backup (use software that can backup on line databases
- thought about a cluster?

any way, enough of a computer nerds ramblings.

Hope to see a lot more of you.

keep up the good work.

Definitely sign up to the vault if you haven't already. It's a bargain for what you get

Why are you not running raid? A single disk failing should never be an issue...

O.o Wow... lucky. Seriously, I would have been so peeved if you guys had shut down. You love this hobby, and providing grounds for your fans to game, collect, and gather information. Plus, I currently live within 30 minutes of the only GW in Michigan... and getting ready to move elsewhere in the state means your going to be basically my only source of Paints and Minis.

raid and redundancy sir. Any business will tell you that if your not backing up your asking things like this to happen to you. Glad everything is back up and running would have to go on a rage without MWG.

I would do an on line back-up too in case whole system fries, building burns down, someone steels the system...

"They went out due to a server crash"...

What a horrible epitaph, I'm so glad that you were able to recover.

I'm sure you've already heard this multiple times already, but 'regular backups are good mmkay'?

Actually, if you are already a member, just click on Downloads at the top of this page and you should have it on there.
Engieviral (Over a year ago): - delete
If you are already a member, the vault trial is removed during checkout - no need to do anything.

Am I to understand that you are hosting miniwargaming.com on a single computer? This seems like a pretty archaic setup for 2012. Matt I highly suggest you look into a so-called "cloud" hosting solution like Amazon Web Services or Windows Azure. Seeing as that this site is your livelihood it seems to me that quality hosting would be a high priority for you.

Losing 3lbs is great. But its probably water weight from the sweating over all the uncertainty. So unfortunately it'll all come back in the next day or so

LONG LIVE MWG! You guys rule
destuctir (Over a year ago): - delete
matt you have no idea how lucky you are that your small when that happened. some guy ran test on microsoft, windows. you know the big guys and on average if a website is down 2 days they are bankrupt. just 2 days and they go under. thats the upside to being small. but really 4 days is a terrible amount of time for your buisness and ill be amzed if it doesnt show in your business update at the end of the quarter

Vault membership is the best thing I did! Went in for some free DVDs a few offers back. Once I watched some of what was already there I had to stay. Hats off to Matt and Dave for a great site and store!

I really feel for you. I've been there, though in my case I actually did have both RAID and backup yet a combination of failures left me thinking I'd lost everything for a couple of days until a new HD arrived and I was able to recover.

It's (almost) the worst feeling in the world and I'm really glad you came out of it all right.

For my part, I now have RAID 5, Backup and automated off-site backup. They each serve different purpose: RAID is for high availability, Backup is for accident protection and off-site is disaster recovery. I wouldn't want to be without any of the three.

that would have sucked if you had fallen after all of your work

I'm going to make a safe guess that MWG is going to have an army of backups after this ordeal! Glad to see MWG made it through with no problems!
