The trunks are from plastic. They where from an old railroad terrain kit I believe. A great way to make trees is to pull up roots from small plants. Turn upside down, clean, trim and paint. I will post some examples.

I tried spray painting cotton balls green and then gluing flock to them. It turned out OK... the treetops in this project where from a hobby store. The best do it yourself technique for bushes and tree tops is to dry out moss. All you do is spray it if you need a different color green.

Very nice, maybe if u just gave them a wash with a darker brown to act as shading it would look a little more realistic,
