Death Guard 4th Company Short Story Part 2

Lamintor woke with a sudden fear, as he looked around him all he remembered from the previous day was being inside the Thunderhawk of the Salamanders and falling into a daze. As Lamintor tried to get up from his bed pain shot all over his body, he collapsed to the floor with a loud thud and Zamiel barged in checking the area for anything out of the ordinary. Lamintor looked up in a haze that caused the room to look foggy through his vision and noticed Zamiel standing in front of him on his knee offering a hand. He took Zamiel's hand and got up with an effort that was harder than it should have been. They walked the corridors for a near hour until they had reached the armory, 'After you brother' Zamiel said to him with a gesture of his hand, and as Lamintor entered he noted the power armor laid out on a table and a heavy bolter placed next to it. He managed a sideward glance at Zamiel and apparently he caught it and a small grin formed on his face. As he put on his power armor Zamiel suggested that they go to the training area, but his words were cut short as an alarm sounded through the ancient vessel. Lamintor snatched up his bolter and Zamiel checked his energy levels and ammo. When they reached the command deck the siren was even louder, he saw the concentration on Commander Demos as he struggled to keep the ship about and sustain minimal damage. 'Power to front void shields' the Commander said. Through his connection to the vessel he noticed that Zamiel and Lamintor were upon the command deck. 'Brothers the archenemy has ambushed us, get to the Thunderhawks just in case this goes bad.' Demos said to the pair. Both of them nodded and raced through the corridors the very hull of the ship being torn apart blast after blast. The pair were shaken about and Zamiel noticed Lamintor was in terrible pain. Finally with one more turn around the corner they made it to the aircraft hangar. Both of them jumped the balcony with ease and were next to the other Space Marines.

Ractus noticed the green and white of the recently found Space Marines and with a raise of the hand the pair raced over. 'Brothers, you will be accompanying my squad when this vessel goes down.' Ractus told them. Both of them didn't need to be told there was no chance for Demos and the rest of the crew, and in one silent prayer each of the marines bowed their heads to take one last remembrance for the crew of the Damorle. 'Men to the ships!' Ractus cried over the loud sounds outside. Men sprinted for the ships in an orderly fashion and 6 Thunderhawks were lifting off two at a time. As the delta formation got more and more distance between them the Damorle was blown up from the inside out creating a supernova of sorts. 'Sir, where are we headed?' The pilot questioned the Sergeant. 'Brother, i do not know. Take us to the surface and we will try to make contact to any nearby ships' Ractus responded. The pilot relayed the order over the comm and each of the Thunderhawks took to their paths. The planet they were too land upon was Primus I, a planet in a sector that has been heavily populated by Orks before. Having recently been purged by the Silver Archangels, there should be Imperial Guard Regiments stationed on the planet.

Lt. Karken looked up and noticed 6 aircrafts were nearing his outpost. 'Men, incoming enemy aircrafts, AA guns, coordinates are marked.' Karken relayed to his men. The soldiers instantly got to work, having been drilled harder to avoid the Ork incursion again. 'Sir!' One of his men called to him, and with a glance Karken waited to know what he wanted. This soldier handed him the binoculars and Karken gazed through them. As the binoculars auto focused he noticed the green and black of the Salamanders chapter. He assumed that they were from the battle barge that had just been decimated. 'Men, stand down, these are friendlies' the men sighed with relief.

Ractus was the first off the ship and saw the urban camo of the Imperial Guard Regiments. Along with the Thunderhawks they had brought 4 rhinos, 2 devastator squads, 1 land raider, and 4 tactical squads. As protocol would note he was in command as Demos's successor of the mission. The rest of the Space Marines there scanned the are and noted any entrances, while Ractus dashed over to the Lt.. 'Current Commander of the mission, Ractus' Ractus told the Lt. 'Lt. Karken 301st Primus Urban Camo Unit' the Lt. responded. The conversation continued but a "Waaaagh!!!" was heard off in the distance. 'Damn the luck, looks like we're in for a fight' Karken called to his men. 'Men, Orks incoming, set up 1 row perimeter, devastators in the bunkers. Keep the transports out of sight.' Ractus spoke through the vox to his men. Now turning to the Lt. 'Where will your men be at Lt.?' Ractus asked. 'I've been requisitioned with artillery and tanks. Minimal infantry' Karken responded. As this was city fighting they should be able to keep a choke point and gun down the Orks there but fate would tell.

As the Orks approached the first of the devastators opened fire cutting down the first 4 or 5 rows. The Orks still trampled over their companions and advanced towards the Imperial lines. Bolter fire erupted and the great cannon of a Leman Russ was shot, easily killing 30 of them in the blast. Lamintor was firing into the crowd finger glued to the trigger, Zamiel snapping off shots from his bolt pistol to enemies who got to close. This is finally where all hell broke loose. Ractus pointed to the sky 'Stormboyz incoming' Zamiel glanced upwards and instantly lifted off the ground, flying towards the incoming Stormboyz. Some of the boyz weren't lucky at all and were cut down in a swathe of bloody strikes from Zamiel, as he reached the peak of his jump, he decapitated one of the Stormboyz, and locked gazes with the Nob. Both of them were heading towards each other at a falling rate and blades clashed. Zamiel bashed the beast's face in with his storm shield and gutted the thing. The rest of the Stormboyz were cut down upon landing by the rest of the bolters. Ractus watched in amazement as Zamiel cut through the Stormboyz. By the time Zamiel was back on the ground brothers were falling. He charged to the front to find Lamintor still holding the trigger with a circle of bodies of Space Marine and Orks around him.

Zamiel cut down and endless wave of enemies taking scores of wounds. As an Ork Nob jumped the trench, Lamintor looked up and pulled the trigger. An empty click was heard and fear struck Lamintor. But combat training took over and Lamintor bashed the beast's chest in and kicked it back, allowing Zamiel to finish it off. As reinforcements arrived to support the pair, Ractus was at the front bolter in hand. The trio stood at the front of the lines, Lamintor pushing orks back with his heavy bolter allowing one of the others to finish them off. They fought for a full 6 hours until finally the warboss approached. Having recently been replenished with ammo, Lamintor opened fire scoring several wounds on the beast. Zamiel was the next to jump and land upon the chest of the beast. Kicking off and thumbing his jump pack again. As the Warboss was recovering Ractus was the next dual bolters in hand, having retrieved the other off the ammo replenishment, emptying clip after clip into the beast, but the Warboss was on guard this time. 'U 'umies don stand a chance against me.' The Warboss yelled as he smacked Ractus to the side. As the Warboss loomed over Ractus, Zamiel's sword pierced the beast's neck. Desperately trying to grab the small sword that had pierced its neck with his power klaw, he failed and took more shells into his chest from Ractus finally killing the beast. Lamintor jumped the cover and helped Ractus up.

When the fighting thickened to the most, the trio lost sight of the rest of the army, and where bodies laid, it was assumed they had been surrounded. The imperial guard took the most casualties, losing all of their infantry including the Lt.. A prayer was voiced through the survivors for the dead, the Space Marines had lost one or two per squad, but ammo was dangerously low. The tanks of Leman Russ were a little banged up but far from useless. The transports had also gone through the fight unharmed. Ractus searched the body of the Lt. and found a few stray shoota bullets landing in his chest, but apparently he fought on until a Nob hacked his head off. He had died a heroes death, and that is how it would go down in the books. Ractus kicked open the door of the command center and found a communications center, sending out a distress signal to any ships passing by. Squads were dispatched out through the city to make sure the Orks had been cleared out, small firefights were heard over the city and Disciple 1 and Disciple 2 reported back the same thing. Any remaining Orks had retreated and were most likely planning for another attack. 'Brethren, today we fought back the enemies of the Imperium, but not without a cost. A hero was lost to us today, Lt. Karken. He fought on even though he sustained major wounds. He will go down in history as a hero and so will the rest of the men lost in this battle.' Ractus called over the crowd.
