MWG Article battle report: A 1500-point 40k batrep – Grey knights VS Chaos space marines

Hello, fellow miniwargamers, and welcome to my article batrep. For this, we have the noblest of the noble fighting those who have fallen from grace: Grey knights – Led by my friend, Al jones – VS my own force of chaos space marines. Let’s begin with a look at the battlefield:

The craters are difficult terrain providing a 5+ cover save, and the hill is open terrain. The ruins provide a 4+ cover.

Deployment:
The Grey knights rolled a 5 to chaos’ paltry 2, and so deployed first. Due to grand strategy, the strike squad gained scouts, and decided to outflank. The terminators deployed as close as possible, as did the dreadknight, while the stormraven was ready to engage at a longer range. Chaos deployed their lord with a retinue of terminators on the hill, while the heavier ordnance deployed further back, and the daemon prince, embarked berserkers and marines – led by captain slaughter’s European cousin, sergeant massacre – deployed on the frontlines.

Chaos failed to seize the initiative, and so the grey knights went first.
First turn:
In the grey knight’s first turn they stormed forward, even the stormraven closing the distance to track the chaotic ordnance. In the shooting phase, the stormraven struck the obliterators – barely in range, the hurricane bolters and assault cannon spat death, inflicting seven wounds and a singular rending shot. The armour protected for the most part, with only the rending shot wounding. The machine-spirit tracked the vindicator, but failed to hit at that range – even though it was twin-linked.
The Terminators fired on the lord, the psycannon and six stormbolters inflicting thirteen wounds between them – but the terminator’s reinforced ceramite and plasteel held, though the lord failed a single save due to wound allocation.
Spying a target, the dreadknight rushed towards the rhino. His heavy psycannon scattered back, missing his own base by an inch, and the heavy incinerator could not find purchase on the hull, but in the assault phase, his greatsword did what his guns could not and wrecked it, all of the passengers successfully bailing out while uttering screams of delight as they realised the prey had come to them.
The chaos turn began with a similar march, but the daemon prince flew over the marines to get to the foe, while the berserkers surrounded the dreadknight.
The shooting phase began with the prince caressing the terminator squad’s mind with lash of submission, succeeding in getting past the librarian’s psychic hood and pulling them a mighty 12” closer – towards him and the lord.
The obliterators, vindicator and defiler shot the stormraven – first, the vindicator scored a direct hit, immobilising it, then the obliterators, whose shots couldn’t get through the thick ceramite plating, and finally the defiler, who only shook the crew with his battlecannon, but then struck with his reaper autocannon, which punched straight through the reinforced glass and burst the techmarine’s head. The downed stormraven became instantly inactive.
Sergeant Massacre wounded the nearby dreadknight with his pistol, but everyone else’s shots dissipated over the monstrous marine’s wrought-iron form. The berserkers, blood-frenzied, were unable to accurately shoot their target.
As they charged down the hill, The lord and his retinue fired their sidearms, but only a single bolter-shell hit home, the explosive bolt blowing off a terminator’s leg. He fell and didn’t get back up.
In the assault phase, three charges were declared – both the lord’s squad and the prince threw themselves at the remaining terminators, whose librarian cast sanctuary and might of titan while draigo chanted out - the result of the sanctuary tripped up the lord’s juggernaut, wounding him again, but no-one else was hurt. The berserkers charged the dreadknight, murder on their minds.
The bloodthirsty berserkers struck at the massive knight, but his high weapon skill and toughness resulted with only two lost wounds. In retaliation, his greatsword flattened four of the power-armoured nuisances, but their nerve held and not a single one fell to their being fearless.
The central combat was more descisive. The prince struck at Draigo even as the grand master’s halberd-armed brothers cut down the chaos lord, and the great monster’s offensive found a gap in Lord Kaldor’s parry, wounding him. Enraged, Drago lashed out with the titansword, and mercilessly butchered the surprised daemon. The chaos terminator’s attacks were repelled by the squad’s justicar, 2+ invulnerable save holding out, who in turn sliced them apart – swift vengeance for his lost battle-brother. Their consolidation brought them closer to the arranged vehicles of chaos.

Turn 2:
Turn 2 saw the arrival of the strike squad, marching on behind sergeant massacre’s motley crew. Draigo and his retinue closed with the vindicator, ready to charge at their master’s order.
The shooting phase was unsurprisingly brief: The strike squad peppered the chaos marines with bolter bursts, the psychically-charged rounds felling a single man. The terminator squad’s psycannon failed to even glance the vindicator, the rounds expiring on the massive dozer blade.
The assault phase saw the strike squad charge while the terminators struck out in desperation at the vindicator, their blow’s strength augmented by 3 successfully-cast hammerhands and the librarian’s armour-rending might of titan. This array of powers meant the terminators struck at strength 8, rolling 2D6 for armour penetration – the resultant damage blew the engine, exploding the unlucky tank. The blast struck at the armour of the squad, as well as the nearby obliterators, but was repelled by their superior armour.
The strike squad, bolstered by a single hammerhand, slew six repugnant traitors, while one lucky hit with a bolter crushed a grey knight’s skull. Sergeant massacre lashed out with his powerfist, but the massive claw was repelled by the Justicar’s warding stave. The chaos marines broke, but there was no respite even in retreat, and they were felled by the remaining knight’s sweeping advance.
In the final combat, the dreadknight snapped two berserker’s spines under the concentrated fury of his attack, while the survivor’s strikes rang harmlessly off his ponderous frame. Fearless, one more berserker was crushed under the great knight’s weight.
The chaos marines found themselves in a disastrous situation – Draigo’s unit was now posed to wreck their way through what little remained of their strike force. Distracted, the defiler sought after new prey – the recently-deployed strike squad – while the obliterators redressed their ranks to fight this new threat.
A torrent of plasma fire burst from their malformed hands in the shooting phase. Unprepared, Draigo suffered a wound, and one less resilient terminator was fried by the energies, but most of the fire was shrugged off.
The defiler’s poor aim meant the battlecannon round went wide of the target, while the other weapons couldn’t wound the powerful psykers, who were unscathed by the effects.
The assault phase saw the defiler charge into the strike squad. Crushing two, it cackled a deep, throaty cackle as their blades rang innefectively from it’s armoured hide. And They Shall Know No Fear meant the squad was stuck in combat, but the no retreat! Didn’t hurt them.
The dreadknight finally found it’s form and slaughtered the remaining berserkers without suffering a single wound in return. Only a single wound left, it turned, intending to even the odds in the fight between the defiler and his own smaller brethren.

Turn 3:
The grey knight’s movement phase saw the terminators advance implacably toward the obliterators, while the dreadknight advanced towards the melee: victory was almost in hand.
The terminators strafed as they advanced, the flurry of bolts felling the wounded obliterator and leaving his comrades disheartened as they steeled themselves for the end.
The assault phase brought two charges, the dreadknight and Draigo’s squad, and the dreadknight was unstoppable, striking blow after blow. The malicious daemon-engine faltered – and then it was split down the middle by the greatsword. It blew, but failed to take any of its opponents with it.
Draigo attacked like a man possessed, and in his fury he slew the obliterators single-handedly. In it’s final moments, one obliterator raised a hand to the sky, beseeching the unholy gods to aid it. When there was no response, It gave in to it’s wounds and fell.
Grey knights victory!
Final score
Chaos space marines : 1
Grey knights : 9

@raviana112: so there's this thing called "constructive criticism". If you are gonna complain about everything you've looked at, at least explain why.
