The tradition of carving a lantern started in Ireland. However it was traditionally carved from a swede or a turnip. They were carved on All Hallows' Eve and left on the door step to ward off evil spirits.[1] An offering or, as we now know it, a "treat" would also be commonly left, as it was feared if you didn't the demons and spirits would fiddle with property or live stock (play a "trick")[citation needed]. Once the tradition moved to the USA it was adapted to the carving of a pumpkin as these were more readily available and easier to carve[citation needed]. The ritual of "trick or treating" was soon invented[citation needed] to re-create the coming of demons and ghouls on the night to dwellings requesting a treat (which is now traditionally given as candy) or a trick would be played. well we both could be right,the truth is we can never be sure where it started,but the idea of jackel lanterns trick or treat and ghosts on halloween comes from ireland.The following is what wickapedia says-Historian Nicholas Rogers, exploring the origins of Halloween, notes that while "some folklorists have detected its origins in the Roman feast of Pomona, the goddess of fruits and seeds, or in the festival of the dead called Parentalia, it is more typically linked to the Celtic festival of Samhain, whose original spelling was Samuin (pronounced sow-an or sow-in)".[1] The name is derived from Old Irish and means roughly "summer's end".[1] A similar festival was held by the ancient Britons and is known as Calan Gaeaf (pronounced Kálan Gái av).
