Im building ruins for my terrain table and, I want to use plastic straws for pipes but I have 15mm miniatures so the building is not as big as regular 40k biuldings. Such as watered down rust colored paint or ink. Even though I also think it wouldn't look as good with the futuristic Tau metals, you ultimately have artistic license over painting your mini's. Rust goes along with steel, not so much with the futuristic metals that the Tau would have. I would try some weathering effects instead, such as chipping, burning, and scarring.
